Most walls in Saskatoon homes are drywalled, and most drywall eventually needs repair. Whether it is a doorknob that punched through, a patch left behind after plumbing work, or cracks that have developed over years of seasonal movement, drywall damage is one of the most common home repair requests we get.

The good news is that most drywall issues are straightforward to fix when handled properly. The key word is properly. A bad patch job is often more noticeable than the original damage.

Common Drywall Problems in Saskatoon Homes

Holes and Punctures

Holes in drywall happen in all kinds of ways. Door handles without proper stops, furniture moving, kids, renovation work, and plumbing or electrical access all leave holes behind. Small holes under a centimetre can be filled with spackle. Anything larger needs a proper patch with tape, compound, and feathering to blend with the surrounding wall.

Cracks

Hairline cracks along corners and seams are extremely common in Saskatoon homes. The temperature swings here are extreme. Walls expand in summer and contract in winter, and over time that movement works on the joints between drywall sheets. Cracks along ceiling lines and above door frames are typical signs of seasonal movement or minor settling and are not usually a structural concern. They do need to be addressed properly though, because a crack that is just painted over will reappear within a season or two.

Water Damage

Water damaged drywall is a different situation. Whether it comes from a roof leak, a plumbing issue, or condensation, drywall that has been wet needs to be assessed before it is patched. If the moisture source has not been resolved, repairing the surface is a temporary fix at best. Once the source is dealt with, the damaged section usually needs to be cut out and replaced rather than patched over, as wet drywall loses its structural integrity and can harbour mould behind the surface.

Popped Nails and Screws

Nail pops and screw pops appear as small bumps or circles pushing out from the wall surface. They happen when the lumber behind the drywall dries out and shrinks slightly, pushing fasteners forward. They are easy to fix but need to be done right. The fastener needs to be driven back in or removed and replaced, a new screw installed nearby to hold the board, and the area skim coated and sanded smooth.

Damaged Corners

Outside corners in high traffic areas get bumped and chipped constantly. The metal or plastic corner bead that protects drywall edges can dent and crack, and once it does the corner crumbles every time it gets hit. Replacing a damaged corner bead and finishing it clean makes a noticeable difference in how a room looks.

Why Proper Finishing Matters

The repair itself is only part of the job. The finish is what you actually see. A properly done drywall repair is invisible once painted. That means the compound needs to be feathered out wide enough to blend with the surrounding texture, sanded smooth, primed before painting, and matched to the existing wall finish as closely as possible.

Saskatoon homes have a variety of wall textures depending on when they were built and how they were finished. Orange peel, knockdown, and smooth are all common. Matching texture takes experience and the right tools. A patch that is technically sound but visually obvious is still a job that needs to be redone.

When to Call a Handyman for Drywall Repair

Most drywall repairs are worth handing off to someone who does this regularly. The materials are inexpensive, but the skill is in the finishing, and finishing drywall well takes practice. If you have multiple repairs across the house, damage near trim or corners, water related damage, or texture that needs to be matched, a handyman with drywall experience will save you time and get a better result than a DIY patch.
